Mühle Glashütte Celebrates 30 Years With The Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994
Mühle Glashütte is a German watch brand with a deep fan base. The company is known for its robust and affordable watches. While the original brand began in 1869, the modern incarnation was resurrected in 1994. Today, we’ll highlight the sixth generation of the family now working with the company. We’ll also mention the final 30th-anniversary piece, the Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994.
I’ve followed Mühle Glashütte for many years and have been impressed by the brand’s commitment to making highly functional and attractive watches. Best of all, the offerings are affordable and often outpace the competition regarding specifications. Now, 30 years since the brand’s reintroduction, a new generation of family members is working at Mühle Glashütte. Also, the last anniversary edition is available, the Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994.
Six generations of family
Before looking at the new Teutonia, it’s important to discuss the role of family in Mühle Glashütte’s business. Hans-Jürgen Mühle resurrected the brand in 1994 in the watchmaking center of Glashütte, Germany. He then passed the company on to his son, Thilo, in 2007. Since then, the brand has grown into a modern and recognizable global entity with a strong reputation. Now, the sixth generation is entering the management team and will create a leadership trio with their father. Thilo will remain responsible for the company as his children gain experience in various functions. Dustin Mühle will lead the manufactory and all production. Fanny Mühle will manage sales and customer care. This family linkage will help ensure the brand is in safe hands for the foreseeable future.
30 years of watches
A highlight of Mühle Glashütte’s past 30 years is the manufactory. Here, the brand’s watches are assembled, and many components are crafted on-site. Since 2008, a specially developed traditional Glashütte three-quarter plate has graced all calibers bearing the “MU 94-” designation.
Another typical feature of watches from this area is the woodpecker-neck fine-adjustment regulator, which Mühle Glashütte created in-house.
Finally, one of my favorite details for a movement is the use of screw-in gold chatons. Mühle Glashütte endows the traditional Robert Mühle line with these higher-end, hard-wearing features.
The Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994
This year, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Mühle Glashütte’s restart, the brand has introduced a series of Edition 1994 limited-edition watches. The 29er Big Bronze, 29er Big Small Second, and S.A.R. Rescue-Timer were all released in runs of 155 pieces. The final commemorative watch is the new Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994.
This 41mm by 51.6mm stainless steel watch is available with the choice of a ribbed anthracite-blue or ice-blue sunburst dial. Both use polished nickel-plated hands. Buyers can also opt to get the Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994 with a suede strap for €3,150 or a crocodile strap for €3,200. A stainless steel bracelet with a butterfly clasp is an option as well, which brings the price to €3,350. Like this year’s previous 30th-anniversary models, 155 pieces are available in each color. Both versions highlight the “30” on the minute track in blue and show “155” instead of “55” as a nod to the brand’s original founding in 1869.
Inside, the watch uses the automatic MU9424-GD with a custom date module, the in-house woodpecker-neck regulator, and 41 hours of power reserve. The screw-down crown winds the movement, sets the time, and changes the big date. Mühle Glashütte tops the 12.6mm-thick watch with a domed and AR-coated sapphire crystal. The case also has a water resistance rating of 10 bar.
Congratulations on the latest Teutonia
Happy 30th birthday to the modern incarnation of Mühle Glashütte, and congratulations to the latest generation of the family leading the brand into the future. The final celebratory watch, the Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994, is a lovely piece that should please fans. If it follows the previous releases, it will likely sell out quickly. We are looking forward to the next 30 years of Mühle Glashütte watches!
